During my Bachelor studies, I developed an interest in energy and environmental matters, in particular related to the clean energy transition, which I sought to expand on. I chose to attend the LLM in Energy and Climate Law at the University of Groningen because it was highly recommended to me by former alumni and the different courses seemed to achieve a great balance between examining those two aspects – energy regulation and climate action.
As part of the programme, we followed a number of courses that focused on providing us with an in-depth understanding of, inter alia, the historic developments of the European energy sector, the current regulation of the upstream oil and gas production as well as the downstream liberalisation of electricity and gas supply. Furthermore, we also got to examine and analyse European climate efforts, in particular those aimed at curbing greenhouse gas emissions in the energy sector, as well as the historic development and basic principles of international environmental law. All those different aspects served to paint a comprehensive and nuanced picture of European energy law and policy and provided us with the tools to critically evaluate them. In addition, the presence of a practical exercise element made the classes quite engaging and interactive and provided us with a platform to discuss different subjects. Moreover, a distinct focus on the commercial aspects of energy law combined with the frequent presence of industry professionals as guest lecturers was, in my opinion, what truly made the programme exceptional and well-rounded, giving us a distinct advantage in terms of career opportunities post-graduation.
The excellent teachings coupled with the vibrant and laid-back atmosphere of the town of Groningen made my one year truly unforgettable. Despite being very demanding, the degree was quite enjoyable and allowed me to gain extensive understanding of past and current challenges facing the European energy sector. I am very grateful for the opportunity and I feel confident and inspired to commence my career.
