Research Young Academy Groningen Members Current members Cohort 2022

S. (Sander) van Lanen

Sander van Lanen works on the geography of inequality, poverty, and social exclusion. As a cultural and urban geographer, he specifically researches social dynamics in neighbourhoods with concentrated deprivation and inhabitant perspectives on social interventions. His motivation is to contribute to cities where all inhabitants can meet their daily needs, independent of where they live or their social status. To do so, the perspective of those unable to adequately meet all their needs is of critical importance. Therefore, Sander often includes elements of participatory methods or citizen science in his research endeavours. He also dedicates time and energy to sharing his experience with citizen groups, policy-makers, and other stakeholders to inspire impactful action.

Sander joined the Young Academy Groningen to be part of a vibrant group that shares a passion for research, the university, and meeting people across disciplines. Currently, he co-chairs the YAG Public Engagement group, with which he hopes to share this enthusiasm beyond the university and reach out to new groups in society.
