About us Faculty of Law International programmes LLM programmes 2025-2026 European Law in a Global Context

Special features of the programme

The European Law in a Global Context programme covers all key aspects of
European Law, but also places them in the context of global developments and
relations with non-EU states and other international organizations. Using the
words of former Judge at the Court of Justice of the European Union, Allan Rosas:

“‘Any meaningful study of the constitutional order of the EU must include the external relations of the Union. In fact, EU external relations law offers one of the best ways of understanding the essential features of the Union legal order in general.”

More than other programmes in European Law, this LLM is also of interest to students that are interested in international law, international organizations and global developments and challenges. More generally, the programme devotes ample attention to interactions between different legal systems and thus studies the interface between global, EU and various domestic legal orders. The teaching team consists of specialists in the field with extensive international networks. The Director of the programme, Professor Ramses Wessel, specialises in European law, with a focus on the interface between EU law and international and domestic law, EU External Relations Law, and the Law of International Organizations. You can read more about his expertise  here.
