Herman W. Hoen teaches both at undergraduate and graduate level. His teaching activities focus on theories of International Relations, in particular International Political Economy, as well as on methods for studying International Relations. Furthermore he teaches bachelor's and master's courses (seminars) that address the International Political Economy of transition in Eastern Europe and the post-Soviet region and the political economy of markets, which are directly related to his research.  

International Relations and International Organization (Bachelor's level)

Bachelor's students International Relations / International Organization are eligible for enrolment in his seminar (core module) International Political Economy of transition in Eastern Europe and the post-Soviet region. This seminar addresses the theoretical underpinnings of transition from a centrally planned to a market economy embedded in a democratic order. Rather than taking stock of the differences in the strategies applied, this seminar scrutinizes political-economic explanations for observed divering strategies.   

International Relations and the specialization International Political Economy (Master's level)

Students enrolled in the Master's degree programme International Political Economy have to attend the course Capita International Political Economy. Starting from the basic assumption that 'what people think and study depends on where they sit', the course is split into four parts: (i) North American IPE, (ii) British IPE, (iii) IPE in Asia and (iv) IPE elsewhere.

He regularly teaches a Master's seminar about the International Political Economy of markets. The primary aim of this seminar is to theoretically underpin the emergence of markets by focusing on the following questions: What is a market and what concepts of markets do prevail in economics, political science and International Relations? How do markets as institutions emerge? Does globalization lead to the convergence of markets?

Master's theses can be prepared under his supervision in the fields of International Political Economy, Institutional and Evolutionary Economics, the issue of Dependency and Economic Development, and Economic Integration and Transition in Europe.

Research Master Modern History and International Relations (Master's level)

In the Master's degree programme Modern History and International Relations, he (regularly) teaches advanced methodology of International Relations.

Graduate School for the Study of the Humanities (PhD level)

For PhD students in the Humanities and International Relations, he frequently participates as a lecturer in seminars, organized by the Graduate School for the Humanities, on theories and methodologies in International Relations.
