M.H. (Marcos) Diniz Guimaraes, PhD

Marcos H. D. Guimarães is an Associate Professor at the Zernike Institute for Advanced Materials (Faculty of Science and Engineering) of the University of Groningen. He is the principal investigator (PI) of the research group Opto-Spintronics of Quantum Materials, studying the interplay between light, electron charge and magnetism, in structures which are just a few atoms thick. The main goal of this research is to uncover and explore new phenomena and use them towards applications in devices for data storage and processing.

In 2020 Marcos joined the Young Academy Groningen, where he aims to help and broaden the science outreach programs. He helped with the organization of public engagement events such as the Noorderzon and the European Researcher's Night, as well as with high school (middelbare school) teachers together with the Scholierenacademie of the UG for the implementation of lecture demonstrations and activities to assist in the teaching of physics and other sciences. In 2024 Marcos joined the board of the YAG.
