Dr. H.M. (Hanna) van Loo

Dr. Hanna van Loo is an Assistant Professor and psychiatrist at the University Center of Psychiatry at the UMCG. Her current research focuses on the causes of depression and anxiety disorders. She uses epidemiological, genetic, and family studies to understand the genetic and environmental causes of these complex disorders. She performs most of her studies in Lifelines, a large general population cohort study in the north of the Netherlands.

She also has a research interest in the classification of psychiatric disorders. With her background in philosophy, she leverages insights from the philosophy of science to better understand how we could improve this classification, for instance by using statistical learning methods. As a psychiatrist, she works in the outpatient department for patients with mood disorders.

Hanna van Loo has been a member of the Young Academy Groningen since 2020. She was a board member of the YAG from 2021-2023 and is a member of the interdisciplinary working group, through which she promotes interdisciplinary research initiatives. One of her other YAG projects focuses on the mental health of students and staff at the university.
