Academic year

Academic year
The academic year in Groningen runs from the first week of September to the end of August and is divided into two semesters of two blocks each. Each lecture block is followed by periods of examinations.

Each block has a total of 7 weeks of lectures, immediately followed by 3 weeks of examinations. The resit examinations of courses are assessed at the end of the examination period in the adjacent block.

LLM students should arrive well before the start of lectures during the first semester, so that they have the opportunity to arrange the necessary formalities and get acquainted with the town and the University. Students arriving late are not guaranteed admission to classes.

On top of that, the University of Groningen organizes a Welcoming Ceremony every year before the start of the academic year. Next to the formal welcoming part of this event, there is also the opportunity to arrange for all necessary administrative matters. All students therefore are obliged to be in Groningen during this Welcoming Ceremony.

After the Welcoming Ceremony, the Faculty offers an introduction programme for all its international students. It is imperative that all students are present for both these events, as it will lift the (administrative) burden for all students before the start of the programmes. Both events are scheduled in the week before classes start, so usually the last week of August.
