Rules to progress from a pre-LLM to an LLM
In principle, admission to the pre-LLM programme is valid for only one year and candidates can only be admitted once.
60 ECTS after one year
After one year, if students have passed all the courses of the pre-Master, they will be issued a “proof of admission” granting them admission to the relevant Master of Laws programme.
50 ECTS after one year
After one year, if students have completed at least 50 ECTS - including the compulsory courses Law and Legal Skills (including IT for Lawyers) and the Research Seminar - they cannot start the LLM programme, but are allowed to extend their registration in the pre-LLM for a maximum of one year. During that year they then have to complete the remaining ECTS of the pre-LLM curriculum, after which they are admitted to the relevant LLM programme.
Less than 50 ECTS
After one year, if students have not completed at least 50 ECTS of the pre-LLM curriculum, they are considered to have failed the pre-LLM programme. This means that they cannot proceed to the LLM programme and also cannot continue in the pre-LLM. If they wish, they can apply for entry into the Faculty’s English-taught LLB programme International and European Law. They can request exemptions for part of the LLB curriculum on the basis of prior education, including courses passed during the pre-LLM year.
30 ECTS pre-LLM programmes
The same rules apply for the 30 ECTS pre-LLM programmes. The threshold is set at 20 ECTS in this case.
