Plannen voor de toekomst: "Na het behalen van mijn masterdiploma zal ik hoogstwaarschijnlijk solliciteren bij een verzekeringsmaatschappij, maar ik houd alle opties open. Zo is het een idee om te reizen als de corona voorbij is nog steeds aantrekkelijk."

Waarom deed je mee aan de Odyssee? "Het was een interessante kans om aan een uitdaging buiten mijn vakgebied te werken."

Wat vond je er leuk aan? "We zijn aan de slag gegaan met veel experts op het gebied van gezondheidszorg, maar ook met experts uit andere vakgebieden. Omdat de Odyssey hackathon zo groot is, was er altkjd wel iemand beschikbaar met expertise op elk gebied dat je maar kunt bedenken. Zo niet, dan zocht de organisatie alsnog iemand voor je. Daarnaast vond ik het leuk om me een heel weekend op één specifieke taak te concentreren en daarbij de wereld om ons heen te vergeten. Het voelde alsof de 48 uur binnen de kortste keren voorbij waren."

Wat vond je niet leuk? "De online interface die werd gemaakt, zag er fantastisch uit, maar zoals te verwachten was voor zo'n groot evenement, waren er enkele bugs. Dit maakte communiceren eerst moeilijk, maar uiteindelijk is het allemaal wel gelukt."

Hoe hebben jullie allemaal de energie behouden na vertragingen door corona? "De energie en het enthousiasme van iedereen die bij de challenge betrokken was, hield me op de been. Eerlijk gezegd verloor elk teamlid zijn energie wel eens ergens onderweg. We konden echter weer genoeg enthousiasme verzamelen bij de start van de hackathon."

Wat voor soort oplossing heeft het team bedacht? "We kwamen met een systeem dat niveaus toewijst aan de gezondheidstoestand van patiënten met een chronische ziekte. Elk niveau had een ander controlesysteem. Regelmatige controle van hoogrisicopatiënten zal voorkomen dat ten minste sommige van hen naar de spoedafdeling gaan. . "

Zou je studenten aanraden om deel te nemen aan de Odyssee? "Als je ooit de kans krijgt om deel te nemen aan de odyssey-hackathon, of het nu online is of op een fysiek evenement, ga er dan voor. Zoals ik al eerder zei, je kunt met zoveel mensen praten met veel expertise op verschillende gebieden. Voor en tijdens de hackathon leer je zoveel! Ook is het hilarisch om erachter te komen hoe je brein functioneert na een weekend van bijna geen slaap en constant denken / discussiëren met je team en bellen met experts. "

Wat heb je geleerd tijdens de Odyssee? "De wereld om ons heen is niet zo perfect als je zou denken. Ik heb veel geleerd over de gezondheidszorg. Wat me verbaasde is dat wij als studenten soms wel eens denken dat de beste modellen en systemen gebruikt worden maar veel is verouderd en er zijn veel problemen. Dus de belangrijkste les die ik dit weekend heb geleerd, is dat innovatief zijn en nieuwe en indrukwekkende oplossingen bedenken belangrijk is, maar de implementatie is net zo belangrijk. Toch krijgt het momenteel niet dezelfde hoeveelheid aandacht! "

En wat heb je gemist? "Ik moest heel lang nadenken om deze vraag te beantwoorden. Het enige dat in me opkomt is misschien wat slaap, maar tijd is kostbaar tijdens een hackathon! Dankzij de fijne kantoorruimte die Bas voor ons had geregeld, was er gezelligheid en teamgeest met daarbij alle input van odyssee. Er was niets dat ik dit weekend zou veranderen. "

Plans for the future: "After obtaining my masters degree I will most likely apply at an insurance company, but I am keeping all options open. For example, the idea of traveling once corona is ‘over’ is appealing."

Why did you join the odyssey? "It was an interesting opportunity to work on a challenge outside of my field."

What did you like about it? "We got to work with many experts in the field of healthcare, but also with experts from other fields. Because the Odyssey hackathon is so large, there was someone available with expertise in any field you can think of. If not, the organization would find them for you.
In addition, I enjoyed focussing on one specific task for an entire weekend and in doing so forgetting all about the world around us. It felt like the 48 hours were over in no time."

What didn’t you like? "The online interface that was created looked amazing, but as can be expected for such a large event, there were some bugs. This made communicating difficult at first, but eventually it all worked out."

How did you all keep the energy after delays because of corona? "The energy and enthusiasm of everybody involved in the challenge kept me going. Being honest, every team member lost their energy somewhere along the way. However, we were able to gather enough enthusiasm at the start of the hackathon."

What kind of solution did your team come up with? "We came up with a system that assigned states to the health condition of patients with a chronical disease. Every state involved a different check-up system. Checking up regularly on high risk patients will prevent at least some of them from going to the ED."

Would you recommend students to participate in the odyssey? "If you ever get the chance to participate in the odyssey hackathon, whether it be online or at the physical event, then go for it. As I said before, you get to talk to so many people with lots of expertise in different fields. Before and during the hackathon you will learn so much! Also, it is hilarious to find out how your brain functions after a weekend of almost no sleep and constant thinking/ discussing with your team and calling with experts."

What did you learn in the odyssey? "The world around us is not as perfect as you would think. I learned a lot about the healthcare system. What surprised me is that we as students are let to believe that the best models and systems are implemented. However, in reality most stuff is outdated and there are a lot of issues. So the most important lesson I have learned this weekend is that being innovative and thinking of new and impressive solutions is important, but the implementation is just as important. Yet currently it does not get the same amount of attention!"

And what did you miss? "I had to think really long and hard to answer this question. The only thing that comes to mind is maybe some sleep, but time is valuable during a hackathon! Thanks to the great office space that was arranged for us by Bas, the fun team spirit and all input from odyssey, there was nothing I would change about this weekend."
