In the list of everyday-technologies that once scared humanity, you will find electricity, trains, cars, wi-fi, even microwaves… at the beginning they were dreaded, boycotted, protested; but, ultimately, regulated and adopted. Our fear of AI is rooted in the response to uncertainty and potential threats. Doubts in AI commonly revolve around the loss of control, privacy, and human value, as AI develops capacities that might outperform human abilities. Thus, it becomes imperative not only to explore novel approaches to use AI, but also to attain a deep comprehension of its inner workings and to be acutely aware of the potential drawbacks associated with its implementation.

As a MSc graduate in Technology and Operations at the Faculty of Economics and Business at the University of Groningen, Data Analytics, algorithms, and AI for process optimization are central to our field of study. Thanks to my Thesis Supervisor, Dr. Christos Emmanouilidis, and his involvement in the European Horizon 2020 STAR.ai project, I was able to explore these topics in-depth. My thesis focused on understanding algorithmic technology and ensuring its equitable application across diverse groups. The underlying objective being to understand and manage potential disadvantages of AI, so that we can reap the tremendous advantages.  

Post-graduation, I continue pursuing this topic as a Strategy Consultant at Strategy&. Here too, AI implementation is a recurring theme in our discussions, as well as customer and business development projects.
