Step 2: How to apply

If you do not meet the admission and/or entry requirements, you have to submit an admission request via the link 'Submit admission request'. Before you fill in the webform, please make sure that you have carefully read about our application procedure and deadlines to submit your files.

Application deadlines

To apply for one of the FSE Master's degree programmes, please consider the start dates and the application deadlines in the table below. These deadlines are strict!

The selective Master's degree programme Marine Biology has a different application deadline:

Required documents

To file an application for admission to one of our Master's degree programmes, you need to upload the following documents in the application process which is described below. Please note that you need to deliver your documents in  PDF and English; other formats and languages will not be taken into consideration! The maximum file-size is 5 MB. If it is not possible to crop your PDF file to < 5 MB, please contact us at  admissionsupport.fse rug.nl.

  1. Curriculum Vitae.
  2. Motivation letter (please include the Master's degree programme + specialization/track that you are interested in, and why, in your letter).
  3. Official transcript of records.
  4. A copy of your Bachelor's degree, or if you have not obtained your degree yet, a document containing a description + planning of the remaining course units in your programme.
  5. Two reference letters.

  6. * You have to fill in a checklist for the non-selective programmes Applied Physics, Astronomy, Biomedical Engineering, Biology**, Computational Cognitive Science, Energy and Environmental Sciences, Industrial Engineering and Management, Mechanical Engineering, Medical Pharmaceutical Sciences, Pharmacy and Physics.

    ** You have to fill in a checklist for the Pre-master's programmes Biomedical Sciences and Biology.

  7. Written report, see the explanation in the checklists (link at point 6).
  8. Writing sample; Provide a report personally written by you that reflects the ability to produce a well-structured and concise report. The assignment handed in is free of choice and can be a report on a practicum, experiment, a literature review, a bachelor’s thesis, etc.(optional document).\
  9. Educational history.
  10. Overview completed courses.
  11. Copy of course descriptions including learning outcomes (only for non-University of Groningen courses);
    Provide a list of course descriptions in English (unofficial translations are permitted) for all non–University of Groningen courses, including the learning outcomes. This additional document can be uploaded under “any additional documents”.

Application procedure

1. Please register in Studielink for the (Pre-) Master’s programme (including the master track if available). Please make sure you meet the payment obligations before the starting date (single payment or in instalments).

Please note; In case you would like to start with a Pre-master's programme, please make sure you register for the Pre-master's programme instead of the Master's degree programme in Studielink. If you have questions on how to register in Studielink, please contact us.

2. Please submit an admission request via our web form (if needed). To know if you need to submit an admission request, please read the information under "Step 1. Entry requirement" carefully.

3. You will be notified about the decision from the Board of Admissions by email.

4. In case you are (conditionally) admitted, you will receive further instructions.
