Machiel Mulder, CEnBER director and Professor of Energy Economics at the University of Groningen, has been appointed as member of the Scientific Climate Council (WKR). This was announced by the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Policy. This independent advisory council will advise the government on climate policy.

Multidisciplinary board

The WKR is a multidisciplinary board consisting of ten members with diverse backgrounds, including Machiel Mulder and two other University of Groningen professors: Linda Steg (Faculty of Behavioural and Social Sciences) and Wouter Peters (Faculty of Science and Engineering).

Extremely Proud

Jouke de Vries, president of the Executive Board of the university, is very pleased with the appointment of no fewer than three University of Groningen researchers to the Scientific Climate Council. 'In the Strategic Plan, we have set ourselves the goal of contributing to solutions to the major societal challenges of our time. Climate change presents us with a task that should not be underestimated. A task that requires a cross-disciplinary approach, a combination of scientific knowledge and skills. The appointment of these three professors affiliated with the University of Groningen, experts in the field of behaviour, energy markets and climatology, underlines the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration and the strength of our broad university. I am extremely proud of the involvement of our professors in national climate policy.'

Machiel Mulder benoemd tot lid van Wetenschappelijke Klimaatraad

Machiel Mulder, CEnBER directeur en hoogleraar Energie Economie bij de Rijksuniversiteit Groningen, is benoemd tot lid van de Wetenschappelijke Klimaatraad (WKR). Dat maakte het Ministerie van Economische zaken en Klimaat bekend. Deze onafhankelijke adviesraad zal het kabinet adviseren over het klimaatbeleid.

Ontzettend trots

Jouke de Vries, voorzitter van het College van Bestuur van de universiteit, is erg verheugd met de benoeming van maar liefst drie RUG-onderzoekers in de Wetenschappelijke Klimaatraad. ‘We hebben ons in het Strategisch Plan ten doel gesteld om bij te dragen aan oplossingen voor de grote maatschappelijke uitdagingen van onze tijd. De klimaatverandering stelt ons voor een niet te onderschatten opdracht. Een opgave die vraagt om een vakgebied overstijgende aanpak, om een bundeling van wetenschappelijke kennis en kunde. De benoeming van deze drie aan de RUG verbonden hoogleraren, experts op het gebied van gedrag, energiemarkten en klimatologie, onderstreept het belang van interdisciplinaire samenwerking én de kracht van onze brede universiteit. Ik ben ontzettend trots op de betrokkenheid van onze hoogleraren hij het nationale klimaatbeleid.’

Verantwoordelijkheid

Machiel Mulder: ‘Het is een eer om in deze adviesraad te mogen plaatsnemen, maar meer nog een verantwoordelijkheid om samen met de andere raadsleden tot goede adviezen te komen over hoe de broeikasgasemissies effectief kunnen worden verlaagd, rekening houdend met diverse andere maatschappelijke belangen.’
