prof. dr. O. (Oscar) Couwenberg

Curriculum Vitae

Oscar Couwenberg is honorary professor of Corporate Governance at University of Groningen, Campus Fryslan in Leeuwarden. From August 2020 to May 2025 he has been a member of the Executive Board of NHL Stenden, University of Applied Sciences. Prior to that he was dean and professor of the Faculty of Spatial Sciences of the University of Groningen for five years untill 2020. Before becoming dean he was for 14 years professor of Law and Economics at the Faculty of Law of the University of Groningen.
He started his academic career studying Economics and Business Administration in Groningen at the Faculty of Economics. He specialized in Corporate Finance. In 1990 he became assistant professor Corporate Finance in the Faculty of Economics. His research concentrated on firms in financial distress and he received his Ph.D. in 1997 on the thesis “Resolving Financial Distress in the Netherlands: A case study approach”.
During his career he has taught extensively on the topics of, among others, (Corporate) Finance, Law and Economics, Corporate Law and Economics (in English, as well as in Dutch).
