prof. dr. O. (Oscar) Couwenberg

Curriculum Vitae

Oscar Couwenberg is currently member of the Executive Board of NHL Stenden, University of Applied Sciences, and honorary professor of Corporate Governance at University of Groningen Campus Fryslan in Leeuwarden. Prior to that he was Dean of the Faculty of Spatial Sciences till 2020 of the University of Groningen. Before becoming dean he was Professor of Law and Economics at the University of Groningen, Faculty of Law. He started his academic career studying Economics and Business Administration in Groningen at the Faculty of Economics. He specialized in Corporate Finance. In 1990 he was appointed as assistant professor Corporate Finance in the Faculty of Economics. His research concentrated on firms in financial distress and he received his Ph.D. in 1997 on the thesis “Resolving Financial Distress in the Netherlands: A case study approach”. In December 2001 he was appointed Professor of Law and Economics at the University of Groningen in the Faculty of Law. He has taught extensively in the topics of (Corporate) Finance, Law and Economics, Corporate Law and Economics (in English, as well as in Dutch).
