M. (Marina) Markellou
My academic and professional background demonstrates a solid ICT and multicultural legal experience. I am an Assistant Professor in Law and an Intellectual Property Law Attorney, admitted to practice in 2003, and I have worked in France and Greece in various academic and professional positions regarding the interpretation and application of intellectual property law, privacy law and ethics.
After accomplishing a Master of Laws in Intellectual Property (LLM) on September 2005 in Montpellier of France, I was offered a scholarship by the Greek State to pursue a Ph.D. degree in the field of Copyright law (University of Montpellier/University of Athens-high distinction).
Three years later, I was offered a post-doctoral grant from the University of Poitiers, where I conducted for 6 months my post-doc research project on “ Re-evaluating the art practice of Appropriation in Europe and in US: legal, art historical and sociological issues ”, at the laboratory of CeCOJI.
Last but not least, from November 2020 and for two years, I conducted my research as a Principal Investigator of AI TRACE, a 2-year Hellenic Foundation for Research and Innovation funded project, which I co-designed. AI TRACE (Synaesthetic engagement of Artificial Intelligence with Digital Arts and its Audience) involved an interdisciplinary team that bringed together established and emerging scholars, artists, developers and cultural institutions to co-design and produce a cutting-edge technological platform, targeted towards the cultural sector, in the form of a mobile application and to experiment with innovative research methodologies.
Since 2010, I am an Adj. Lecturer at various public Universities in Greece and in Cyprus where I mainly teach Intellectual Property Law and Cultural Heritage Law. I have presented my work in many international conferences and workshops and have also acquired wealthy experience by co-organising conferences, seminars and workshops over the last ten years.
My interdisciplinary background along with my professional experience in various Organisations and European Research Projects has provided me with a strong skills toolkit and multi-layered knowledge of the legal, societal and ethical aspects of the emerging technologies. I was till very recently working as an Ethics Advisor at the National Centre for Scientific Research Demokritos and at the Centre of Security Studies (KEMEA) where I contributed in many HORIZON 2020 Projects as an external Ethics advisor ((FLY-SEC, TRESSPASS, MARINE-EO, Focus-Locus, PREVISION, SPIDER, iBorder, MEDEA).
I am a member of the Reseaserch Ethics Committee of NCSR Demokritos and I am also a external member of the Ethics Advisory Board of Horizon project VIGILANT (Disinformation and fake news are combated and trust in the digital world is raised - Topic ID: HORIZON-CL3-2021-FCT-01-03).
