- 2021 - ongoing. 'Water as Leverage' for urban climate resilience in coastal areas. PhD research project with Aryani Chandramidi, prof. Jos Arts, dr. ir. Annet Kempenaar, Henk Ovink/Special Envoy for International Water Affairs and the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO). Funding: Faculty of Spatial Sciences/RVO.
- 2021 - ongoing. 'Spatial quality in flood risk management' (Dutch name: 'RuiKwa-LAB, 'Ruimtelijke kwaliteit in waterveiligheidsbeheer'). This project aims at investigating how spatial quality can be secured in current dike reinforcement projects from the National Flood Protection Programme to create more resilient water safety landscapes. The project is a cooperation between the RUG and Wageningen University, crowd-funded by several Dutch water boards and consultancy agencies. - 2020 - ongoing. 'Water sensitive governance in Indonesian cities: The cases of Bandung, Semarang, Medan and Makassar'. PhD research project with Martin Drenth, prof. Ron Holzhacker and prof. Johan Woltjer. Funding: Faculty of Spatial Sciences.
- 2020 - ongoing. 'Metamorphic climate change adaptation: How collaboration between governmental and civil society stakeholders could lead to more transformational climate change adaptation.' PhD research project by Allard Roest, together with Ir. F. Boogaard, Lector Spatial Transformations, and prof. Ina Horlings (RuG). Funding: Hanze University of Applied Sciences.
- 2020 - 2021. 'Water as Leverage Resilient Cities Asia / WAL REFLECT project – reflective research project commissioned by Henk Ovink, the Special Envoy for International Water Affairs. Together with dr. Annet Kempenaar, dr. Tim Busscher, and prof. Jos Arts (all RuG) and OECD and AWB.
- 2019 - 2021. NWO SURF research project ‘Spatial designers as boundary spanners in transformations to a sustainable development.' Comparative research project of Room for the River (NL), Sigma Plan (Belgium), Rebuild by Design (New York) and Water as Leverage in Semarang, Indonesia. Together with dr. Annet Kempenaar, dr. Terry van Dijk and Naim Laeni.
- 2017 - 2021. 'Institutional design for the transition to flood resilience in developing countries'. PhD research project with Naim Laeni and prof. dr. Jos Arts (both University of Groningen). Funding: UG/Faculty of Spatial Sciences.
- 2016 - 2020. 'Room for the River: organizing for spatial quality'. Evaluation of how Room for the River projects have produced spatial quality - which ways of working have been developed and to what extent were these successful in producing spatial quality? Research project commissioned by Rijkswaterstaat, together with dr. Tim Busscher and dr. Stefan Verweij (both University of Groningen).
- 2012 - 2018. 'Flood resilient cities? Resilience strategies in flood risk management and urban planning – a comparative analysis of Hamburg, London and Rotterdam'. Comparative research project with Britta Restemeyer (University of Groningen) and prof.dr. Johan Woltjer (University of Westminster). Funding: Dutch National Science Foundation (NWO).
- 2012 - 2017. Establishing resilient coastal zones - a study on the use of ecosystem services to integrate the spatial planning of land and sea'. Research project with Ruiqian Li (University of Groningen) and prof.dr. Johan Woltjer (University of Westminster). Funding: CSC China.
- 2007 - 2009. 'Institutions for Adaptation: the capacity and ability of the Dutch institutional framework to adapt to climate change'. Postdoc research. The objective of this research was to assess the adaptive capacity of the Dutch institutional framework in dealing with climate change. Funded by the BSIK-programme Climate changes Spatial Planning (KvR IC-12).
- 2003 - 2007. 'Long term institutional continuity and change in Dutch river management'. PhD research. From a discursive perspective, this project examined the organisational transformation of Rijkswaterstaat within Dutch river management. Funded by the Dutch National Science Foundation (NWO) - programme Land Ocean Interactions in the Coast (LOICZ).
