In the Netherlands, a dazzling number of 1 million people suffer from diabetes and this number is on the rise due to our aging and increasingly obese population. The hormone insulin, produced by pancreatic beta-cells, controls energy homeostasis and its deficiency causes diabetes.

In our lab, we focus on the interplay between insulin production and action and aim to identify molecular mechanisms behind the loss of functional beta-cells. For this, we use preclinical models to perform in-depth analysis of systemic physiology, cellular biochemistry, intracellular signal transduction and transcriptional regulation.
