dr. D.P.H. (Dick) Barelds

I was born in Emmen, The Netherlands, in 1973, and moved to Groningen in 1991 to study Chemistry at the University of Groningen. After two years, I switched to Psychology, and I received my MA in Clinical Psychology in 1997. Next, I worked for two years at the University of Groningen before starting my PhD research in 1999. I received my PhD in 2003, and have been working as an assistant professor ever since at the University of Groningen, first at the Differential Psychology group, and now (since 2010) at the I/O Psychology group.

My research interests include personality, intimate relationships, and physical attractiveness, often in combination with each other. I have published in several peer reviewed journals (e.g., Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, Journal of Research in Personality, European Journal of Personality, Body Image, Personal Relationships, Journal of Social and Personal Relationships). I am currently the treasurer and member of the Executive Committee of both the European Association of Personality Psychology (EAPP) and the World Association of Personality Psychology.
