SUMMARY DESCRIPTION: André P.C. Faaij (1969) is appointed as Director of Science of ECN part of TNO (since 1st November 2018), the largest energy research organisation of the Netherlands, the merger between ECN (Energy Research Centre of the Netherlands and the energy division of TNO the Netherlands Organization for applied scientific research. He focuses on strategy, large research initiatives and collaboration with academia. He combines this position with a part time chair as Distinguished Professor Energy System Analysis at the University of Groningen (RUG).
Prior to this position he was Chief Scientist of the New Energy Coalition (including the Energy Academy Europe), Distinguished Professor at RUG. In this position, he worked with many stakeholders on energy transitions from regional to international level. The Energy Academy Europe is set-up as a centre of excellence and Public Private Partnership on Energy Research, Education and Entrepreneurship and is as such a cross-cutting strategy priority for the University of Groningen and its’ partners (including the energy sector, the Hanze University of Applied Sciences and the regional government), including some 500 scientists from natural to social science.
Until spring 2014, hewas Professor and scientific director of the Copernicus Institute of Utrecht University (130 scientists); positioned on place 24 of the Shanghai Ranking in the field of Energy Science and Engineering.
The research he coordinated was subject to external evaluations in 2000, 2004, 2007 and 2014, which qualified this research as overall ’Excellent’ with respect to ‘Productivity, Quality, Viability and Societal Relevance’, showing strong international leadership in its’ core areas as Energy System Analysis, Biobased Economy and Carbon Capture and Storage. Ongoing research covers energy system integration questions, modelling, transition processes towards low carbon energy systems and related innovation and policy questions.
He supervises a range Ph.D.-projects in the mentioned areas. Over the years, he developed and coordinated courses for various curricula, e.g. on research methods for energy and material systems. He is in particular experienced in research and management of research in a multidisciplinary as well as international setting. Examples are programmes for the National Science Foundation, large multi-year programmes on energy system analyses, sustainable use of fossil fuels and Biobased Economy and a wide range projects for the EC, international bodies (UN, IEA, a.o.), governments and companies. Acquired research funds amount today some 45 MEuro.
He is a member of a variety of expert groups in bio-energy and energy policy, research and strategic planning. He works and worked as an advisor for governments, the EC, IEA, the UN system, GEF, OECD, WEF, WEC, the energy sector & industry, strategic consultancy, NGO’s, etc. Between 2003 and 2012, he was Task Leader of Task 40 under the Bio-energy Agreement of the International Energy Agency on ‘Sustainable International Bio-energy Trade’ and, in the same framework, acted as national representative in several other tasks. He is an advisor to various UN energy activities (including UNIDO, UNEP, FAO).
Earlier, he was Lead Author for the World Energy Assessment of the United Nations (published in 2000), as well as the new Global Energy Assessment (GEA) (published in 2012). the WorldWatch Institute’s book on Biofuels for the 21st Century, IEA’s World Energy Outlook. the IPCC 4th assessment report (Lead Author), Convening Lead Author for the Special Report on Renewable Energy, Lead Author on Energy Systems and Agriculture, Forestry and other land use for the IPCC 5th assessment report and the SCOPE report from UNESCO on Bioenergy & Sustainability (2015). Being part of IPCC, he was jointly awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2007.
Furthermore, he was appointed Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum and 2015 he received The Linneborn Prize; established in 1994 for outstanding contributions to the development of energy from biomass.
He is board member and works as guest editor several key energy journals is a much asked reviewer for a variety of journals, scientific (including the European Research Council (ERC), National Science Foundation and the Royal Academy) and government bodies. He published over 600 titles in scientific journals, reports, books and proceedings, qualifies as ‘highly cited researcher’ (top 1% of research field) by criteria of Thomson Reuters ISI Web of Science, (co-) organized a range of international workshops and conferences and is frequently lecturing across the globe.
