prof. dr. A. (Annemieke) Hoek

Dr Annemieke Hoek (1960) is professor at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, section Reproductive Medicine, University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG). She is initiator and member of the “Reproductive Origin of Adult Health and Disease” research group at the SHARE institute University Groningen and is actively involved in clinical research in infertility treatment and reproduction.

In 1988 Dr Hoek graduated (cum laude) at the Medical Faculty of the Free University in Amsterdam. In the same year she was appointed as a PhD student at the Medical Faculty of the Free University in Amsterdam. From 1991 till 1996 Dr Hoek combined this position with her training as resident in Obstetrics and Gynaecology in the same institute. She investigated the underlying immune mechanisms associated with premature ovarian failure under the supervision of Prof. J. Schoemaker and Prof. H.A. Drexhage (thesis 2006). From 1997 till 1999 she was granted a two-year clinical fellowship in reproductive medicine at the Free University Medical Center in Amsterdam. She is registered gynaecologist (1997) and subspecialist in reproductive medicine. Since 1999 she works at the UMCG, Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, section Reproductive Medicine. She is principal investigator in the research School UMCG from 2008 onwards and became associate professor in 2011. From 2001 till 2004 she participated in a feasibility trial evaluation IVF in “modified natural cycle” and implemented this form of IVF in regular patient care in the northern provinces of The Netherlands. Moreover, she initiated research on the association between ovarian reserve and reproductive outcome such as, early pregnancy loss and trisomic pregnancies. She initiated research on the role of body fat distribution and the role of body weight reduction in anovulatory obese infertile women. She is project leader of a randomized clinical trial evaluating the cost-effectiveness of lifestyle intervention in obese subfertile women. This randomized trial is conducted in 23 hospitals in The Netherlands involving 580 women. She has been “co-promotor” for three PhD students and at the moment she coordinates the research of three PhD students. During her career, she has been involved in teaching and supervision of medical students and residents.
