Outreach
We believe it is important to connect to the society outside academia, either by providing a view on our own research or inciting students towards a study in sciences.
See below our initiatives towards outreach!
Our work is facilitated by the Young Academy Groningen (YAG), of which Marcos is part of, and the Scholierenacademie at the University of Groningen. See below the research minute video recoded for the YAG.
Activities for High School Physics (Electromagnetism)
Together with the Scholierenacademie, we have developed lecture activities for Dutch high-schools. In these activities the students assemble small demonstrations of electromagnetic phenomena by themselves using conventional household items. After assembly, the students have to complete a series of "challenges" which use concepts seen in class. The lecture plan, brochure and videos can be found in the Scholierenacademie website.
Publications and perspectives aimed at the general public
* Freddie Hendriks, Jan Hidding, and Marcos H. D. Guimarães, "Symmetry, Light and Spins in the Flatland", FMF Periodiek, Univ. of Groningen Physics and Appl. Physics Student Association (2020).

Classroom demonstrations lab
Together with Jelle Blijleven, we run a Physics Demonstrations Lab. We aim to provide tools for lecturers at the university to make their classes more visual and interesting. At a later stage we will open our demonstrations lab to the local teaching community of the northen Netherlands and expand our demonstrations towards other scientific fields.
This effort is supported by the Young Academy Groningen and by the Physics and Applied Physics programs at the University of Groningen.
