The Zernike Institute for Advanced Materials is a research institute at the Faculty of Science and Engineering of the University of Groningen. The Scientific Director, the Board and the Coordinating Office form the management team of the Zernike Institute for Advanced Materials.
• The Scientific Director holds the ultimate responsibility for the research lines, the selection of personnel, and the allocation of funds. They function as the official representative of the institute.
• The Education Director is responsible for the division of teaching tasks and the development and recruitment of teaching staff within the research institute.
• The Board of the Zernike Institute has the responsibility to review and approve proposals by the Scientific Director concerning long-term research plans, the annual budget, and personnel selection. The board also functions as a sounding board for the Scientific Director on policy matters. Within the Zernike Institute, the board is actively involved and acts on behalf of the director on strategic portfolios (“collegial board”). The individual board member receives a mandate of the director for a given portfolio and takes the responsibility for: (i) Drafting or adjusting the strategy of the particular portfolio, (ii) Guiding the implementation (planning, monitoring and adjustments). The strategic portfolios as of 2020 are Education, Funding, PR&Outreach, Strategic Partnerships, and Organization.
• The Zernike Institute Coordinating Office assists the Directors and the Board in many aspects of their management activities.
