Setting up a Double doctorate

The Double Doctorate (DD), also known as a Double Degree or Cotutelle, allows a PhD candidate to earn doctoral degrees from two different universities, resulting in two diplomas.

Key Features of the Double Doctorate Program:

• Joint Supervision: The PhD candidate is jointly supervised by two faculty members, one from each participating university.
• Single Dissertation, Two Degrees: The candidate submits a single dissertation and, upon successful defense, is awarded PhD degrees from both universities.
• Dual Graduation Ceremonies: The candidate typically participates in two graduation ceremonies, one at each university.
• Promotion Regulations: The candidate must adhere to the promotion regulations of both the home institution and the partner university.
• Minimum Stay Requirement: To qualify for a Double Doctorate, the candidate must spend a minimum of six months at the partner university. This duration may vary depending on the specific agreement with the partner university.
• Funding: PhD candidates in the Double Doctorate program are often funded by external sources, which may cover part or all of the program costs.
• Agreement between Universities: Participation in the Double Doctorate program is contingent upon an agreement between the two universities involved.
