NVHG Prizes for Nine Knoers and Marc Jan Bonder

Current and former members of the department have been honoured with prizes from the Dutch Society for Human Genetics ( Nederlandse Vereniging voor Humane Genetica (NVHG)) at the NVHG fall symposium on October 2 , 2018.

Department head Prof Nine Knoers was awarded the Galjaard Lecture Award. This award was created by the NVHG to honor scientists who successfully bring genetics to the attention of the public. The award was given to Prof Knoers in recognition of her major contributions to clinical genetics, particularly her research into hereditary kidney diseases. In her award lecture, 'Towards the Genetics Clinic of the Future: from genetics in genetics at the heart of healthcare', Prof Knoers outlined her vision of the future of clinical genetics at the heart of healthcare.

Former PhD student Dr Marc Jan Bonder was honored with the NVHG’s Young Investigator Award in recognition of his excellent dissertation on the role of the microbiome and DNA methylation in human health. Dr Bonder had previously received the 2017 Tekke Huizinga prize for the best thesis in the UMCG. He is now a postdoctoral fellow at the EMBL-European Bioinformatics Institute in Hinxton, Cambridge, England.
