Crasis Network Scheme 2024:
CRASIS aims to support and stimulate research projects on antiquity that transcend disciplinary and faculty boundaries. To this end, CRASIS invites applications from researchers seeking to establish multi- or interdisciplinary research networks. The CRASIS Networks scheme aims to create opportunities for researchers in Groningen to work together around a common research interest. In these networks members support each other in developing research projects and writing grant applications, as well as organizing events that support discussion and disseminate the work of the network members. CRASIS offers to give financial support for the organization of network events for a period of two years.
Bringing together staff and research students from across faculties and at different career stages, CRASIS Networks promote interdisciplinary thinking and the development of collaborative skills. The convenors of Networks must come from three different disciplines (of which at least two must be part of CRASIS) and the theme of the Network must relate to the study of Mediterranean antiquity. We encourage Networks which bring the study of antiquity into conversation with other disciplines as well as contemporary societal issues. Ideally, network events should provide genuine opportunities for discussion and collaboration and should be open to participants from across the University of Groningen and the Protestant Theological University.
Activities
Activities organised by the network may include seminars, reading groups, discussion forums, guest speaker talks, performances, film screenings, guided walks, visits to museums, handson workshops and any other activities that will further the intellectual and collaborative aims of the Network.
The choice of research theme and the range of activities organized by the network is to be decided by the Network convenors, CRASIS does not aim to set the networks’ agendas. We also do not set an initial threshold for the size of a new network. Indeed, we welcome innovative applications that will enable small groups of scholars to create new networks and introduce research agendas that will develop during the course of the years that the Network exists. We favour networks that plan a range of ongoing activity over the two years of funding rather than a single large event.
In 2023 two Networks have been selected for funding by means of drawing lots. These are the networks Mortuary Ritual: Textuality and (Im)Materiality and Time and Temporalities Network
Requirements
- Hosting one of the Ancient World Seminars each academic year.
- Organizing a graduate workshop
- Organizing an event for BA students
What CRASIS can offer:
- Funding for 2 years, up to 1200 EUR for 2 years. Applications for smaller amounts are very welcome too.
- Networks receive one slot per year in the monthly Ancient World Seminar. The network selects a speaker to invite, CRASIS will pay travel costs for the speaker, and drinks and inner after the seminar (up to a limit of 280 EUR per seminar).
Applications for 2024 will be evaluated on their fulfillment of the requirements stated above and their fit with the aims of the network scheme:
- To promote multidisciplinarity by creating a community of researchers from across the Groningen academic community.
- To promote the integration of education and research.
If we receive more applications (which fulfill all the required criteria) than the budget allows for, funding will be allocated via a lottery system.
