ProAct
Proactive Management of Antarctic Tourism
In the project 'Proactive Management of Antarctic Tourism: Exploring the Role of Antarctic Treaty System (ATS) Principles and Values and Best Practices Beyond the ATS' (ProAct) we cooperate with Utrecht University and Wageningen University & Research. The project is funded by the Dutch Research Council (NWO), and commenced on 1 March 2021 and will run for a period of 5 years.
The ProAct project aims to support the Netherlands and possibly the Antarctic Treaty Consultative Meeting (ATCM) in proactive management of tourism within the ATS on four themes:
- maximizing visitor numbers by a cap-and-trade system;
- constraining diversification of activities by pre-assessment procedures;
- improving domestic implementation of ATS tourism regulations;
- enhancing the role of non-use and non-user States
Kees Bastmeijer is involved in theme 2, 3 and 4.
Elena-Laura Álvarez Ortega is a PhD at the Arctic Centre working at theme 3
