Join us at our conference Law and Noncommunicable Diseases: The crosscutting role of law in NCD control and regulating risk factors on 31 May and 1 June in Groningen.

Most deaths that currently occur globally are the result of non-communicable diseases (NCDs), also known as chronic diseases – in particular cardiovascular diseases, most cancers, chronic respiratory diseases, and diabetes. Although medical science plays an important role in reducing the NCD pandemic, law and policy are also crucial, in particular as they can address behavioural risk factors (such as smoking, excess alcohol consumption, unhealthy eating and a lack of physical exercise). However, there are currently few effective laws and policies designed to help reduce and/or prevent NCDs. In the Netherlands, although the debate about regulating risk factors has intensified, there is still a lack of understanding how international law plays a role and of best practice examples from abroad.

During the conference, we will investigate how international and domestic law and policy standards can assist in preventing and reducing the incidence of non-communicable diseases. We have invited a range of renowned international experts, including Oscar Cabrera, Amandine Garde, Andrew Mitchell, and Allyn Taylor to enrich our programme.

Wij nodigen u van harte uit om ons congres getiteld  Law and Noncommunicable Diseases: The crosscutting role of law in NCD control and regulating risk factors  bij te wonen op  31 mei and 1 juni in Groningen, evenals een aanpalend seminar over de rol van de industrie op 1 juni ‘s middags.

Gezondheidswetgeving en -beleid zijn onvoldoende toegerust om adequaat in te spelen op de mondiale toename van chronische ziektes zoals kanker, diabetes, hart- en vaatziektes. In Nederland komt de discussie langzamerhand op gang, maar er is een gebrek aan kennis inzake de rol die internationale standaarden spelen en de ervaringen die andere landen hebben met het succesvol implementeren van wetgeving ter regulering van ongezond gedrag. Op dit internationale congres bespreken wij hoe internationale en nationale regelgeving gezond gedrag kan bevorderen, in het licht van internationale (mensenrechten)standaarden.

We hebben een aantal gerenommeerde internationale experts uitgenodigd, waaronder Oscar Cabrera (mensenrechten en tabak), Amandine Garde (ongezond voedsel in de EU), Andrew Mitchell (handelsrecht-beperkingen), en Allyn Taylor (aan de wortel van het WHO-kaderverdrag inzake de tabaksontmoediging) om ons programma te verrijken. Tijdens de conferentie zal er ruimte zijn voor discussie en voor het leggen van nieuwe contacten.
