A lot of things might go through a law students mind, but I like to remind myself all the time about what are my most favourite things about studying International and European Law. Being part of such an interesting programme has shaped me and my knowledge in being able to pursue a legal career. The LLB is challenging, rewarding, and unique; so with that in mind, here are 5 things I like about studying in the International and European Law programme at the University of Groningen: 

1. The international aspect of being part of the LLB

One of the most interesting and exciting aspects of the programme is that you will be able to be part of an international community; you will be studying alongside people from all over the world. All of my friends are from different corners of the globe and we get to share stimulating ideas and thoughts. Moreover, we get to learn about each other’s cultural traditions and ways of living. Having different colleagues around me means that I am studying side by side with other passionate and smart people who share the same interests regarding law as I do.

2. Challenging critical thinking, analysis, and writing skills

As a law student, you will be constantly challenged across the three years. Law is a complex field and thus requires a plethora of skills, such as problem-solving skills, efficient analysis, and quick reading. Especially at the exams, students need to show enough competences in order to solve legal problems — accuracy is key and it is very important to pay attention to details. Time management is also a skill that I learned during my studies in law - without it, I could never have succeeded throughout the years. Writing well is another skill that I had to acquire, thus as time has passed and I got more and more experienced, I was able to articulate complicated thoughts and complex theories without any problem - it became natural for me.

3. Acquiring deeper knowledge in different legal fields

From criminal law to contract law to administrative law and constitutional law (but not limited to), the programme includes everything. During my LLB, I gained a good knowledge of different legal fields. I got used to working under pressure as well, and have exceeded my expectations when it comes to how much material I can read in a week. Deepening the knowledge in various legal fields is especially important when it comes to studying International and European Law because it helps in understanding the broader picture and thus being able to solve legal problems more efficiently.

4. The mix between international and European law

During the LLB, we have a good mixture of both International and European Law. The intertwining between the two is helpful whilst studying law - we get a good idea of International law in the sense that we learn about global legal systems and how they influence international and national policies. European Law is equality important as  studying European Union law is a commitment in itself. This is often the course that most students find the most challenging, yet I think it is one of the most satisfying courses of the whole LLB because the EU has a broad range of influence to national laws.

5. The learning environment

What I like most about studying International and European Law is the learning environment: the professors are devoted to their fields and the courses that they teach are very well though outt. The working groups are pleasant to follow and well-organised. Professors are always available and open to any questions, they take all the time needed in order to make students understand and to facilitate learning. I always leave the working group feeling motivated and ready to engage with the study material with more confidence.
