Rules & Regulations GIED

General

• This Global & Intercultural Engagement Distinction is only available for students who have passed their BSA (so who have passed at least 45 ECTS from their first year courses); registration in the LLB programme or in one of the Faculty's Master’s degree programme is required.
• All categories are subject of approval by the Board of Examiners of the Faculty of Law.
• Students can be exempt from a maximum of two modules of the Global & Intercultural Engagement Distinction.
• Students are allowed to spread taking all categories during both their Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programme. If so, the Global & Intercultural Engagement Distinction will only be mentioned on the Master’s degree diploma supplement.
• The approval of modules/items is solely at the discretion of the Board of Examiners of the Faculty of Law.
• All categories need to be approved for the Global & Intercultural Engagement Distinction before they are started.
• Students are allowed to use several smaller modules/items to make up for the workload of one category.
• Modules/items can only be used for one category. Should the workload of a combined module/item exceed 12 ECTS and would be eligible to fall in two categories, an exemption can be granted for the same module in the second category.
• GIED modules are extracurricular and as such will never be part of GPA calculations.
• Categories 2-5 can only be filled after the GIED workshop has been taken.
• Students are only allowed to start the workshop when intending to finish all categories.
• 1 ECTS stands for 28 hours of work; each category therefore represents a minimum of 168 hours.

GIED-workshop

• The workshop Developing Intercultural Competence should at all times be the GIED starting point.
• All three components of the workshop Developing Intercultural Competence should have been successfully completed before the earmarked 6 ECTS for the workshop can be awarded.
• The 6 ECTS for this category is only awarded upon completion of all GIED-categories.
• Attendance is compulsory for this workshop; students need to be present at all sessions.
  
  

GIED courses

• MOOCs cannot be recognised as GIED courses.
• Prior approval of the Board of Examiners is needed in case of courses taking elsewhere.
  
  

GIED work experience/internship(s)

• The international and/or intercultural component needs to be proven by an official representative of the organisation in which the work was conducted. The approval should be on the official letterhead paper of the organisation and should hold the name, position and original signature of the person giving the approval.
• The approval should hold specific details of the nature of the international and/or intercultural component in the work.
• The international and/or intercultural component needs to be proven by a representative of the organisation you have been working for.
• The workload of this work experience/internship needs to be at least 168 hours in total for you to be granted the category.
  
  

GIED language

• You need to prove to the Board of Examiners that you have acquired a certain level of a different language than your mother tongue and/or the language of instruction of your programme.
• The required level is to at least improve one level in the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR).
• Only internationally recognised courses which are based on individual assessment can be accepted.
• Certificates of participation will not be accepted by the Board of Examiners.
  
  

GIED study

• The Board of Examiners will only accept exchange periods which are part of the regular University of Groningen Law Exchange Programme.
• Students who take a study period abroad as a compulsory part of their programme can only receive an exemption for this GIED category.
• Students who participate in a study period abroad as an extracurricular addition to their programme can choose to either have the semester abroad mentioned as (extra-curricular) courses on their degree certificate and thus with an exemption for this category for the GIED or they choose to use (part of) their study period abroad to fill this GIED category.
• The exchange period can be proven by handing in the final transcript from the host university plus the approved and signed learning agreement to the Board of Examiners.
• At least 50% of the original study abroad approved courses/courses on the learning agreement need to be passed in order for the study period abroad to be accepted by the Board of Examiners for GIED. Summer and/or winter schools can be proven by handing in the course descriptions of the organising research university and the formal certificate provided at the end of the summer and/or winter school.
• Summer and/or winter schools have to be organised at research university level, to be determined by the Board of Examiners.
• A combination of summer and/or winterschools should have a minimum workload of 6 ECTS (168 hours) in total.
