In Groningen, we go the extra mile to equip you with the knowledge and skills needed to navigate the complex landscape of modern supply chain management with a strong focus on sustainability. For example, we teach you to understand, analyze, and develop strategies to cope with clean energy solutions and efficient transportation in designing and managing global supply chains.
You will have the opportunity to not only gain the relevant knowledge but to also put it into practice. Companies bring in real-life cases where you work on the design, integration and coordination of supply chains at multiple levels, bringing innovative and dynamic solutions to this fast-paced business environment. You learn from industry experts in the field by joining guest lectures, visiting companies and career events and taking the master internship (optional).
In this programme, you follow MSc Management with a specialization in Service Management at the Católica Porto Business School in your first year. In the second year, you will advance your expertise in MSc Supply Chain Management here at the University of Groningen.
You start with the mandatory course SCM Fundamentals, covering the basic knowledge and skills to analyze supply chain performance and the important role of coordination.
Each of these aspects is further advanced in the mandatory courses Supply Chain Processes, focusing on diagnosing and improving supply chain processes, and Supply Chain Coordination, providing state-of-the-art knowledge on managing complex supply chains. Research methods for SCM prepares you for a successful Master’s Thesis in SCM. Theory comes to life when you join guest speakers, work on case studies with practical data sets, and present your project results to managers.
Recent innovations towards sustainability and digital business that affect supply chain management decisions are discussed in the programme, both in mandatory and elective courses. Option group A courses enable you to specialize within the supply chain management discipline, in courses such as Sales and Operations Planning, Purchasing, Facility Design, or Sustainable Transportation. Our alumni are highly versatile and can work in a wide range of positions and industries, such as production, retail and e-commerce, energy, and logistics.
You might decide to work as a supply chain planner to efficiently link production and sourcing, as a logistics engineer to improve the transport, storage, and distribution processes, or as a continuous improvement specialist to ensure high-quality products and processes. Also, you can work at consulting firms and advise businesses on supply chain optimization, future technologies, and strategic planning. You may opt for an academic career, instead, and delve even deeper into the dynamics of supply chain management. Thanks to the programme’s focus on energy and a healthy society, you can kickstart your career in organizations committed to sustainable practices.
Our research-driven education is strongly rooted in business practice and society. At the heart of our teaching approach is (interdisciplinary) research and in collaboration with external partners, students and professors conduct projects on societally relevant topics.
In collaboration with external partners, we conduct research projects on (e-commerce) logistics, healthcare and service supply chains, resilience, port logistics, transportation, energy transition, sustainable energy supply, last-mile deliveries, and sustainable logistics. Example projects can be seen at our research group Centre for Operational Excellence (COPE) . The research institute related to the MSc programme is Operations Management and Operations Research .
The supply chain focus especially attracted me, as many companies face significant challenges in efficiency and sustainability—areas where there is still much progress to be made. This potential for meaningful impact strongly resonated with me.
My favorite course was Sustainable Energy Supply. It offered valuable insights into one of the most critical global challenges and aligned perfectly with my career goal of contributing to sustainability. To deepen my expertise, I selected the energy focus area, which provided the opportunity to specialize in a field I am deeply passionate about.
I was very satisfied with the support from the lecturers. The combination of lectures and practicals was well-balanced. The practicals delved deeper into complex topics, such as calculations and Excel assignments, which made them very helpful. They also provided a great opportunity to collaborate in project groups and to ask real-time questions and address challenges directly with the lecturers.
Throughout the programme, I have developed strong critical thinking skills, especially through project work. While the feedback was sometimes extensive and demanding, it pushed me to analyze problems more thoroughly. The open culture within the programme created a positive learning environment, with engaged lecturers and a diverse, international student community enriching the experience.
The integration of theory with practical applications, such as company projects and case studies, has prepared me well for my future career. The diversity and collaborative atmosphere truly make this programme exceptional.
