General information

Registering at the University of Groningen

You must register as a student at the UG before 1 September. You will not be able to start your degree programme if matters like uploading your ID, filling out your qualifications and paying your tuition fee, have not been arranged before 1 September! Studielink provides an overview of everything you need to have done. Read more about it on Application and registration and contact Students Information & Administration if you have any further questions or need help.

To do list

As soon as your registration is fixed, you can arrange the following things to properly prepare for the start of your degree programme:

Before you can start with your programme

More information for international students

International students are expected to participate in the Welcoming Ceremony for international students organized by the University. You will receive an invitation to the event approximately 1.5 months in advance, so make sure to keep an eye on your inbox.

A lot of information will be given, for example:

  • how to open a bank account,
  • how to apply for a residence permit,
  • health insurance,
  • accommodation/housing,
  • registration at city hall.

More information

Check the practical information about studying and living in Groningen for international students and read the Pre-departure Guide which explains all you need to know about studying at the University of Groningen.

Course enrolment

As a new student, you will be automatically enrolled in the classes and thus courses of the first semester. From the second semester onwards you will have to enrol in courses yourself. The Office for Student Affairs will inform you of the enrolment period and procedure by (student) email. More information can also be found on the Student Portal.

Once you are registered for a course unit, and provided you satisfy the relevant entry requirements, you will in principle automatically be registered for the exam.

Seminar groups

All first-year students, including HBO pre-master students, will be assigned to a seminar workgroup by the secretariat of their study programme. Which group(s) you are in will be announced through Student Portal (Brightspace) in the week before the start of the lecture(s). Please report to the secretariat if you have not been assigned to a seminar by the start of the semester. You may switch groups should you wish to do so. Please arrange any changes with your fellow students (using the e-mail button in Brightspace) and report them to both the secretariat and the lecturer of your seminar.

From the second semester onwards you will have to enrol in seminar groups yourself.

Buying readers and compulsory literature

Readers

Readers can be ordered from early August onwards via Canon. The readers will be delivered to your home. Make sure to order your readers on time.

Compulsory literature

The Online Course Catalogue Ocasys (select the correct academic year) provides overviews of the literature that you must buy for each course unit during the first semester. You only need to look for the books belonging to the subjects of the first block. The second block does not start until November.

Order the books yourself from a high-quality bookshop or order them with a discount when you sign up as a member of your study association. Don't wait too long with ordering your books. Shops may run out of the required texts and it can take weeks before they are in store.

Tip: improve your grades and reduce the stress and workload of the academic year by doing some advance reading!

Functional impairment

Do you have AD(H)D, ASD, Dyslexia or another functional impairment that may affect your studies or study progress? If you would, for example, like to be considered for special facilities please contact your student adviser as soon as possible, but at least before the start of the academic year.
