2.1. Effective feedback practices in PhD supervision

The ability to give corrective feedback constructively is considered one of the critical aspects of PhD supervision, and a key aspect of academic leadership. Yet giving feedback does not come naturally for many of us. In fact, many of us steer away from giving feedback. During this workshop we will practice simple techniques that will enable you to give feedback to your PhD candidate, so that it will be well received and will have a positive effect on their learning trajectory.

Objective

At the end of this workshop you will have practiced a proven method to give feedback that is effective in any situation and any type of feedback.

We will focus on:
✓ Tips and techniques for giving effective feedback
✓ Practical experimentation with these techniques on your specific case
✓ Choosing the right format and moment for feedback
✓ How to create an environment where giving and receiving feedback is welcome and appreciated.

Programme

During this workshop we will start from the theory and the content that is exposed in the online training “Effective PhD supervision: a shared Journey”. The focus of the workshop will be on the practical implementation of feedback, and you will relate the theory to the specific situation of your PhD supervision. In addition, we will review how different types of feedback can have different effects, and we will discuss how different modes of feedback better fit one situation or the other. The workshop is a mix of group discussion and smaller group practice.

Results

After this training you will have learned how to give effective feedback in any situation of the PhD trajectory, both on content and on process and soft skills

What participants value in this training:
✓ discussion of concrete examples in the group and in pairs.
✓ have a concrete sense of what it means to give feedback, and to receive it.
