New collaboration between UGBS and Faculty of Spatial Sciences: education for professionals
The University of Groningen Business School (UGBS) and the Faculty of Spatial Sciences (FRW) of the University of Groningen have signed an agreement to work together on education for professionals. Bringing together knowledge and experience will provide new educational opportunities for professionals working in a variety of organisations.
A first joint programme has already been launched, providing participants with knowledge and tools to design effective participation processes in line with the new 2024 Omgevingswet (Environment Act): the 3-day executive programme Spatial Decision Making and Public Participation (Ruimtelijke Besluitvorming en Burgerparticipatie - start 31 January 2025).

'Changing labour market'
'Lifelong development has become an important theme in a changing labour market where new knowledge and skills are expected from people all the time,' said Nikolaj Bijleveld, director UGBS. 'With this collaboration, the University of Groningen is contributing to the opportunities for professionals and organisations to develop further.'
Contribution to regional prosperity
The signing of the cooperation was done by Prof Johan Woltjer (dean FRW) and Prof Peter Verhoef (dean Faculty of Economics and Business) representing UGBS. Both deans see opportunities for developing new programmes that combine the strengths of both parties:
'For example, there is a lot of knowledge about regional economic developments that is very relevant for public and private organisations in the northern provinces. If we bring those parties together, let them share expertise and experiences and bring in our scientific knowledge and make it applicable, we will contribute to the broad prosperity of the region.'
Johan Woltjer emphasises: 'FRW has the knowledge to approach major societal challenges from a geographical, demographic and planning perspective. Bringing in the expertise of UGBS in developing education creates the opportunity to offer new themes and knowledge to professionals.'

The threatening chasm in the countryside
The supposed chasm between city and countryside is not that bad, according to Felix Pot. ‘A threatening chasm in the countryside is more likely: between car owners and the people who do not have their own mode of transport.'
