Recently, the Community of Practice for “Teaching Innovation in STEM Education” decided to look at the Open Educational Resources (OER). Our University is promoting the use of OER through the University Library, and the Open Education pillar of the Open Science programme.
However, the question stays: can a free textbook be of good quality? Up-to-date and reliable? In this opinion paper we will discuss different types of the OER, including open textbooks, open interactive tools, open courses, MOOCs and an open source assignment platform. We will not only address the question of how free materials can have a high-quality, but also how OER may allow for collaboration and verification of materials. Moreover, we will underline the importance of OER as a part of “Recognition and Reward” initiatives.
This session will cover the highlights of a white-paper project by the Community of Practice for “Teaching Innovation in STEM Education”.
