Dr. Ferdinand Lewis

Alongside my role as Senior Lector in Humanities at University College Groningen, I also serve as Director of Science and Education for Arts in Health Netherlands at the Aletta Jacobs School of Public Health. My research and community advocacy focus on arts in health, and also on quality of life in the built environment. I am lead author on the 2024 national arts in health agenda for the Netherlands. I have published on the role of the arts in community health resilience, and made contributions to the literature on urban design and quality of life, planning theory, and capability approach to human development, and community-based art-making. Prior to coming to the Netherlands, I served as Director of the Center for Building Better Communities at the University of Florida, where I was also a member of the Urban & Regional Planning faculty, and an artist in residence at UF Health Shands Hospital. I hold an interdisciplinary doctorate from the Sol Price School of Public Policy at the University of Southern California. I earned a master of fine arts degree from the California Institute of the Arts, where I also served on the faculty for nine years.
