Expertise
As Professor of Auditing & Assurance at the University of Groningen (Faculty of Economics & Business, department of Accounting & Auditing) I take a special interest in the study of culture, leadership, and governance in the realm of the auditing and assurance profession. My expertise lies in the study and measurement of organizational culture, leadership, and behavior in view of performance, governance, and control of organizations, professional service firms, business units, and teams.
I believe that practice driven yet rigorous research is best done, under conditions, in close collaboration with the professional field – that is, practice-oriented research and knowledge exchange is what drives me and where I am able to contribute most meaningfully to research and education. Accordingly, almost all my research projects are in close collaboration with businesses and practice. The focus of my work and research is on ways to effectively strengthen organizational culture and leadership on an evidence-informed basis, including measurement of organizational culture and leadership for management information purposes. I focus on professional services firms.
In April 2022 I was appointed member of the Dutch Accountancy Education Standards Board (CEA) that sets and supervises the learning outcomes of the accountancy programs at the Dutch universities.
I previously was full professor of Behavioral Research in Auditing at Nyenrode Business University (Department of Accounting, Auditing, and Control), where over the period 2012 - 2021 I also was the director of the Accountancy degree programs (Bachelor, Master, and Post-Master). Since its inception in 2015 until 2022, I was one of two managing directors and academic member of the Board of the Foundation for Auditing Research, a unique collaboration between science and practice, conducting practically relevant and rigorous academic research into the drivers of audit quality based on empirical data of the affiliated nine largest Dutch audit firms and a research budget of EUR 1.6 million annually.
Before joining academia fulltime in 2012, I have been working as an auditor in the assurance practice of PwC for 18 years, the last 10 thereof in combination with teaching and PhD research in the Department of Accountancy of the University of Groningen.
