Expertise

I am Assistant Professor in European Languages and Cultures at the University of Groningen's Center for Language and Cognition. My research centers on how people produce socially meaningful patterns of language variation, with a particular focus on how such variation signals group membership and relates to broader structures of social inequality. My work primarily examines these issues in the context of social class, gender, and mental health. Additionally, I have a strong interest in language ideologies.Within this field, I have co-introduced the term “grassroots prescriptivism”. This concept broadly refers to speakers’ efforts to implement and promote standard language ideologies. I explored this phenomenon in depth in my doctoral dissertation of the same name (Leiden University, 2018), and have since been working to diversify scholarship on prescriptivism by highlighting research on languages outside the (Western) European context. These efforts culminated in the publication of the Routledge Handbook of Linguistic Prescriptivism (Beal, Lukač, & Straijer, 2023), the first comprehensive resource in the field. My research has since expanded to include the evolving pronominal systems in English and Dutch, more specifically, the trends surrounding non-binary pronouns. I am especially interested in the social and linguistic factors that influence the acceptability of these pronouns and how guidelines on inclusive language can be crafted to improve their reception among different speaker groups. In addition, I am increasingly interested in the language of mental health. Currently, I am conducting corpus-based discourse analysis of narratives from individuals who have experienced trauma, aiming to identify linguistic patterns that reveal pathways toward coping with their experiences. *If you are interested in joining my research group, please email me with a brief description of your profile, research interests, and why you would like to work with me in Groningen. If you have secured funding (either external or internal) for your PhD, please include this information in your message.*
