Expertise
Dr. Cleo Nisse specializes in early modern art, with a focus on southern Europe, particularly Venice. Her research interests include the history of artistic practice, art and ecology, technical art history, and the intersection between art history and conservation. Her current book project, Venetian Canvas, offers both a new history of a catalyzing change in painting technique and a demonstration of the rich interpretive potential to be found in the physical foundations of images. Nisse received her B.A. degree from the University of Cambridge, trained as a painting conservator at the Courtauld Institute, London, and completed her MPhil and PhD at Columbia University, New York. Immediately prior to joining Groningen University, she held a three year Paul Mellon fellowship from The Center for Advanced Studies in the Visual Arts, National Gallery of Art, Washington D.C.
