The Dutch science foundation NWO announced the results of the recent Rubicon grant application procedure. Pedro Buzón, who is performing his PhD research in the Molecular Biophysics lab under the supervision of Wouter Roos, is one of the lucky recipients this round. Buzón’s grant application, with the title “Disordered paths toward symmetry”, has as focus to scrutinize the different paths that viruses can take to form their symmetrical structures. The grant provides financing for two years and Buzón will use this to perform post-doctoral research in the lab of Ben Schuler in Zürich.

Rubicon is part of the NWO Talent Programme, aimed at retaining talented already postdoctoral researchers for science. Research experience abroad is usually a vital aspect of building a scientific career. Rubicon allows recently graduated, talented scientists to gain experience at a foreign top institute for a period of 1-2 years. This increases the chance that they can continue working in academia. Rubicon bridges the phase between obtaining a PhD and being eligible for funding from the Talent Scheme.
