Better steel through nanotechnology: Bart Kooi receives High Tech Materials (HTM) grant

12 November 2015

Nanotechnology deals with the very small (e.g. atoms, molecules), while steel production processes are far from small scale. The standard batches of TATA Steel in Ijmuiden, who are cofinancing the grant of Kooi, are as large as 300 tons (~the weight of 60 elephants). But, although the difference between molecule and elephant scale appears huge at the first sight, there is a lot of nanotechnology in modern steels. Kooi will perform research on how nanoparticles influence the steel quality by changing the nanostructures of the final steel. Read the full ScienceLinX story about the project and see the FOM website for a list of all awarded projects of the HTM call.
