Daan Meerburg granted research project, launched through NWO Open Competition Domain Science-M programme

10 January 2024

The NWO Domain Board Science has approved sixteen grant applications in the Open Competition Domain Science-M programme. The topics vary from an informatics study on runtime monitoring, how honeybees use fungi, and mycobacteria transport proteins, to exploring the non-Gaussian 21cm universe, mapping glycosylation reactions, and the role of mitochondria in synapse development. M-grants are intended for innovative, high-quality, fundamental research and/or studies involving matters of scientific urgency.

What is the origin of the Universe?
Dr Daan Meerburg & Dr Christoph Weniger (RUG/UvA)

In an attempt to address this question, this research project will use clever and very advanced computer algorithms. By simulating and analysing radiowaves from the early universe, we will explore whether this algorithms can distinguish a signal from the early universe from the noise and provide clues about its origin. Results from our work will be of direct importance to existing and upcoming radio experiments with direct involvement of the Dutch astronomy community.
