Title:

Entanglement entropy in 2d string theory

Abstract:

Holography teaches us that spacetime is many ways an emergent concept. But how do the degrees of freedom of the dual state encode a semi-classical spacetime? In a local field theory, degrees of freedom which are spatially close are also highly entangled. We therefore look for such entangled modes in the non-gravitational theory to isolate the corresponding local dynamics in the bulk. We consider the large-N quantum mechanics dual to two dimensional string theory as a toy model to test these ideas. By studying the entanglement of matrix eigenvalues, we reproduce the entanglement entropy of the bulk scalar field, with an inherent explicit UV cutoff.
