The Study Centre conducts multidisciplinary behavioural and legal research in relation to children (and their families) who are involved in immigration procedures. This concerns refugee and migrant children. In addition, the Study Centre conducts pedagogical assessments in individual asylum and immigration cases of children and their families, which identify the best interests of the child in the concerned case. These pedagogical assessments are presented by the lawyer of the child during the asylum or immigration procedure as and expert opinion. Further, the effects of the reports on the decision-making are examined. The Study Centre aspires to contribute to a further development of behavioural and legal knowledge about children involved in immigration procedures, and to encourage the recognition of these children’s special position in the context of asylum and immigration law, as well as to the recognition of their rights.

The Study Centre for Children, Migration and Law bases its research on internationally recognized behavioural science theories, insights and studies. With regard to the legal research, the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child is primarily used as a basis.
