Research
All linguistic research at the faculty of arts is carried out within the Center for Language and Cognition Groningen. Research done by the members of the department of Linguistics fits within two research groups of CLCG:(Theoretical and Empirical Linguistics or Neurolinguistics and Language Development.
1. Theoretical and empirical linguistics studies the syntax, semantics, morphology, phonology, and phonetics of a variety of languages with a view to enrich our empirical knowledge as well as our theoretical understanding of the nature of the human language faculty. A core characteristic of this research is in-depth cross-linguistic comparison, both synchronically and diachronically. We aim to contribute to the abstract formalization of the properties of language
2. The Neurolinguistics and Language development group is concerned with the organization and use of first and second language in the brain, through the study of three related fields: aphasia and developmental disorders of spoken and written language, semantics and cognition, and first and second language development, including language acquisition and language attrition. Research in this field has been largely experimental using a wide range of methods, including offline and online tasks, spontaneous speech analysis, event related potentials, functional magnetic resonance imaging, and reaction times. The varied focus of research within the group has been on (relations between) neurolinguistics, aphasiology, developmental language disorders, semantics and cognition (including first language acquisition), second language development and bilingualism (including language attrition), foreign language instruction research, an early foreign language learning.Last modified: | 08 May 2019 11.45 a.m. |
