The Kapteyn Mobile Planetarium is an inflatable dome 3.5 metres high and 6 metres in diameter. Inside, interactive films are projected of the night sky, planets, stars and galaxies. Astronomy students from the University of Groningen use these projections to explain how beautiful, big and special the universe is!

The dome is intended for educational purposes and is therefore mainly used for school visits in both secondary and primary education. The dome fits approximately an entire school class.

Book the planetarium

If you are interested in visiting the planetarium, you can fill in the online application form. To avoid disappointment, it is wise to check first that your preferred date is not already booked. You can do this by checking the planetarium calendar.

You can find more information about the course material and costs under More information.

Please note that the dome can only be used indoors; therefore, an empty room of at least 7 by 7 metres, with a high ceiling of 3,5 metres, is required.

The planetarium will mainly be used for school visits in the northern provinces of the Netherlands, Drenthe, Friesland, and Groningen. In the central/southern provinces, the Netherlands Research School for Astronomy visits schools with a similar mobile planetarium.
