Title | Carving a path towards a better understanding of complexity
Speaker | Noam Abadi, PhD student at IREES
Abstract
In the context of social, economic and environmental (and many other) systems, the notion of complexity is often encountered. Despite being vaguely defined (and usually not at all), it seems to be central to how "difficult" it is to infer information that is not directly provided. In this colloquium, I will give a pragmatic definition of complex systems which will be the starting point for a discussion on the relation between complexity and other (better defined) notions such as scale, energy, symmetry and entropy. Finally, I will attempt to braid these ideas together in a series of experiments which are aimed at establishing a link between entropy and complexity.
