Informatie voor studenten

Introductie

De afdeling Genetica participeert in onderwijs binnen verschillende curricula. Artsen, onderzoekers en analisten van de afdeling zijn betrokken bij onderwijs aan (toekomstige) artsen, tandartsen, analisten en onderzoekers. Onze afdeling staat voor goed onderwijs en werkt daar continu aan. Een aantal medewerkers ontwikkelt nieuwe interactieve en inspirerende vormen van onderwijs om Genetica onderwijs nog leuker te maken.

We verzorgen onderwijs binnen bijvoorbeeld het tandheelkunde en geneeskunde curriculum, maar organiseren ook volledige cursussen, bijvoorbeeld voor Biologie en Life Science & Technology studenten.

Daarnaast verwelkomen we ieder jaar veel stagiaires om ze ons vakgebied in de praktijk aan te leren. Dit zijn HLO (hoger laboratorium onderwijs) studenten die klaargestoomd worden om als analist de arbeidsmarkt op te gaan, maar ook universitaire bachelor en master studenten die graag onderzoeksvaardigheden aan willen leren.

Onze afdeling investeert ook in de scholing van haar medewerkers voor het geven van het onderwijs. Een aantal heeft recent de zogenaamde Basiskwalificatie onderwijs (BKO) gehaald en dit aantal zal snel stijgen.

We also develop new courses, especially for University College Groningen and for the G2020 Learning Communities. And we have developed two online tools for our students: LabBuddy is used as a modern lab manual and LetsGetWiser+ is a tool for the first step towards our goal of providing a 'Virtual Clinic for Precision Medicine'.

Internships in genetics

The Research section in the Department of Genetics has 12 places available for student internships (stages). JSM Students' newsflashes win prizes

Two first-year JSM students in Sebo Withoff's mentor group (2014) won prizes at the concluding symposium on May 12th. One of the students' exercises was to write and present a Newsflash (2-3 pages on a scientific breakthrough, written for the layman). The students could choose a recent paper to base their newsflash on. Seth Tabishgou won the report prize (€250). Bob Schut was runner-up for the presentation prize. See their JSM newsflashes:

G2020 - The new Groningen Medical Curriculum

Learning Communities: In G2020 a cohort of some 400 students will be divided into four communities known as Learning Communities (LCs), each with its own focus, profile dean and teaching staff: Global Health, Sustainable Healthcare, Intramural Care and Molecular Medicine. The LC provides the academic-medical context in which the ambitions mentioned above are realized. During the selection process for the degree programme, students choose one of the LCs. Once they have been admitted, they will complete their Bachelor’s degree programme within that LC, with the profile, the small-scale nature of the teaching and the direct contact with a limited group of lecturers creating ties amongst students and within the community.

Bachelor projects

The G2020 curriculum is a bachelor programme for all students. To successfully graduate from this programme, students must complete a 14-week Bachelor Project. This project is the culmination of the Bachelor’s degree programme, in which students put what they have learned during their course into practice for the first time. During the Bachelor Project students focus on a specific medical problem (i.e. the topic has a clear link with a patient's clinical problem or with a group of patients' clinical problem). Students will work in small groups on the project. There is a syllabus summarizing the goals and criteria for the G2020 Bachelor Project and it is relevant for both students and the departments that want to submit a proposal for a Bachelor Project. July 2017: Waarom wordt de één ziek en de ander niet? Interview for City of Talent/Campus Groningen. "Vijftig tinten grijs. Het verband tussen genetische foutjes en het ontstaan van ziektes blijkt lang niet zo zwartwit als we altijd gedacht hebben. Genetica Cisca Wijmenga, verbonden aan het Universitair Medisch Centrum Groningen, zoekt uit hoe het kan dat de één wel ziek wordt en de ander niet, ondanks dezelfde genetische afwijking."
April 1, 2017: Artikel in de NRC Handelsblad Genetische verandering in een hogere versnelling Biotechnologen kunnen het DNA van een organisme zó veranderen dat het een bepaaldeeigenschap bijna altijd doorgeeft aan het nageslacht. Zo kun je ziekten bestrijden.
