Building a roadmap for neuromorpic computing: ecosystem kick-off in Eindhoven

02 July 2024
Ecosystem meeting in Eindhoven

On Friday the 28th of June, entrepreneurs, researchers and policymakers gathered for a meeting in Eindhoven, aimed at building a collective roadmap for brain-inspired computing. With 60 participants, the turnout was highly encouraging!

The programme featured engaging talks, panel discussions, and breakout sessions on key topics like promising applications and research impact.

Professor Beatriz Noheda, one of the initiators, remarked: “In the past couple of years, people from different fields have started collaborating to develop a brain-inspired computer. The Netherlands clusters several of these initiatives and has attracted some of the best experts from abroad. Together with our colleagues in neighbouring countries sharing the same vision, the time is ripe to start defining the entire neuromorphic computing ecosystem.”

A highlight was the discussion of the whitepaper 'Neuromorphic Computing in the Netherlands', which outlines the current landscape and emphasises the need for a unified approach. The whitepaper aims to serve as the foundation for a shared roadmap, driven by community collaboration.

Sywert Brongersma, director Strategic Partnerships at imec and initiator: “Good partnerships start with good connections between people and that was clearly the case here! Now we need to build on this and find ways to align the timelines and interests from the various disciplines and stakeholders.”

The meeting ended in the new 3eality Hub with a clear takeaway: the collective realisation of the importance of taking the stage and advancing this field together. The energy and enthusiasm from all participants were palpable, allowing for a quick and effective follow-up. Plans for our next meeting are already in the works!
