Title: Solar Home Systems.

Summary:
During this ESRIG-EES colloquium Solar Home Systems (SHSs) will be presented. The presentation focuses on the system level of SHSs. A Solar Home System is a stand-alone photovoltaic system supplying electricity in the range of 100Wh/d. This is suitable to supply basic electricity services such as illumination, bi-directional (cell-phone) and mono-directional (radio, TV) communication. A SHS consists of a photovoltaic generator (appr. 50Wp / ½m²) connected to a charge controller, and a battery. It operates DC appliances. Two system levels will be approached: I. The technical system with its energy balancing challenges II. The socio-economic system with a focus on the demand for basic electrification of dispersed households. This technology offers significant technical, economic and social advantages in rural off-grid areas of sunbelt countries. This ESRIG-EES colloquium will highlight technical as well as socio-economic aspects of SHSs.
Short biography:
Hans Holtorf lectures in the Postgraduate Programme Renewable Energy (www.ppre.de) at Carl von Ossietzky University Oldenburg. His main lecturing topics are PV systems and Hydro- and Marine Power. In addition, the module Renewable Energy (RE) Project consisting of the 10 day RE focussed excursion & the RE Case Study as well as multiple cross sectional tasks belong to his job characteristics. Hans originally is a mechanical engineer. After his PPRE studies in 1988/1989 he was lucky to get employed at the University in Oldenburg where he dealt with the technical part of miscellaneous RE projects. For 15 years his main focus has been PPRE. From 2010 to 2016 he did his PhD on evaluating the success of Solar Home Systems at Murdoch University in Perth, Western Australia.
