Francesco Picchioni receives FSE Impact Award 2024

07 January 2025

We are happy to share that Prof. Francesco Picchioni has been honored with the FSE Impact Award 2024 for his groundbreaking contributions to sustainable innovation. His patented method for recycling rubber represents a major advancement in circular economy practices, offering both environmental and industrial benefits.

Francesco’s work addresses one of the most pressing challenges in waste management by developing scalable solutions to repurpose rubber, a material widely used but notoriously difficult to recycle. By developing a patented chemical process to reprocess vulcanized rubber,he has found a method to significantly reduce the need for petroleum-based materials and, in turn, the harmful impact of tire incineration. The successful implementation of this method in a pilot plant, capable of processing up to 1,500 tons of rubber annually and producing durable recycled materials, demonstrates concrete societal impact. The production of the first products using recycled rubber further highlights the project's practical and measurable contributions. Francesco's research exemplifies the mission of our institute to translate scientific discoveries into meaningful applications that drive societal and industrial progress.

Picchioni received the Award in the researchers category and receives a cash prize of 1,500 euros for impact activities. The prize was awarded during the Faculty New Year's Reception in the Energy Academy.
