Gretchen Wilson’s Performance of Class, Gender and Sexuality in American Country Music.

Nadine Hubbs is a publicly engaged  historian, theorist, and critic whose scholarship and media engagements take a musical perspective on U.S. society and culture. Her writings focus on popular and classical music of the twentieth century to the present, including Bernstein and the Copland-Thomson circle, 1970s disco, Morrissey, Radiohead, Springsteen, and country music. The author of two books—The Queer Composition of America's Sound and Rednecks, Queers, and Country Music—and many essays and articles, she also co-edited Uncharted Country: New Voices and Perspectives in Country Music Studies and is writing a book on Mexican American country music engagements. Her work has been featured in the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, The Nation, Salon, Slate, VICE, Billboard, Times Literary Supplement, The Guardian, Pacifica Radio, NPR, BBC, WNYC, Swedish Radio, and other outlets, and in a range of podcasts including Dolly Parton's America. She serves on the editorial boards of the Journal of the American Musicological Society and Journal of Popular Music Studies, the governing board of the Society for American Music, and the advisory board of Pop Conference.

Hubbs’ presentation for the Center for Gender Studies zooms in on country star Gretchen Wilson and her unique performance of class, gender and sexuality within the American country music industry and landscape. The presentation will also highlight facets of the author’s award winning book Rednecks, Queers, and Country Music, in which Hubbs looks at how class and gender identity play out in one of America’s most culturally and politically charged forms of popular music. Skillfully weaving historical inquiry with an examination of classed cultural repertoires and close listening to country songs, Hubbs confronts the shifting and deeply entangled workings of taste, sexuality, and class politics.
